Trail running is more than a sport. It’s seen by many as a lifestyle and an experience. The will to win exists as it does with more traditional forms of running, but it does not carry the same weight. For trail runners, the experience of pushing their bodies on steep, demanding, and technical terrain is enough of a reward. It’s also a close-knit community. Often referred to as ‘Sky Runners’, there is a strong sense of camaraderie between each other. It’s not uncommon for groups to stop as they pass each other, hug, and shout out supportive words of encouragement.
Madeira is growing in popularity with the international trail running community. Once a destination for retired couples looking for a calm, sunny destination away from young families fighting over sunbeds, now we’re seeing a cultural shift. An influx of digital nomads, and travelling professionals displaced by the global pandemic. With them, they bring a range of experiences, habits and hobbies that were perhaps not so prevalent on the island previously. As a result, opportunities for local trail runners to promote themselves as experienced guides, helping the island visitors navigate the outstanding trails, and meandering through the wondrous natural beauty that Madeira has to offer.
2Madeira are a dedicated team of trail running enthusiasts, with a deep local knowledge of the island’s topography, climate and most importantly the best areas and trails for year-round trail running. Depending on your skill level, easy, moderate, and hard routes are available.
Easy trails: Distances between 8 and 14km, including an elevation gain of 600m to 1600m, are located across the island, with some local favourites being Ribeiro Frio, Chao Dos Louros and Poiso.
Moderate trails: Between 11km and 22km, with an elevation gain of between 1400m and 1800m. Some highlighted and popular routes are around Machico on the east of the Island, and Fanal, high up on the northwest coast.
Hard Trails: Those looking for a challenge can take on some of the most iconic and challenging routes Madeira has to offer. Trail lengths are between 20 and 40 kilometres in length, with challenging climbs, technical descents, and stunning natural beauty. The top of our list would be Sao Jorge. Beginning in Calhau Sao Jorge on the north-eastern coast of Madeira, climbing from 18 meters above sea level, to the island’s highest peak, sitting over 1800meters. Boasting supreme, 360 degrees, panoramic views of the island.
All our Trail Running Tours come with an experienced local guide, insurance, snack bar, water, and pick-up/drop-off at your accommodation. For safety, a Thermal Blanket, whistle, and flashlight are provided for all group members.
